If you’re like most Firefox users, you probably have a bookmark folder that’s missing some or all of its content. If this is the case, you can restore it by following these steps:

  1. Open Firefox and click on the three lines in the top left corner of the main window. This will open a menu that looks something like this:
  2. On the left side of this menu, select “Options.”
  3. In the “Options” window, select “History.”
  4. In the history window, select “Open Bookmarks Folder.” This will open a new window with a list of your bookmarks:
  5. Scroll through your list and find your missing bookmark folder by clicking on it and then clicking on the blue arrow next to it to show its location in Firefox’s memory hierarchy. If everything is correct, your bookmark folder should be back in place!

Luckily there’s a simple about:config tweak that will restore it, requiring almost no work at all.

In case you aren’t sure what we’re talking about, here’s the default Smart Bookmarks folder, which dynamically shows you the “Most Visited”, “Recently Bookmarked” and “Recent Tags” bookmarks:

Type about:config into the address bar, accept the warning message, and then filter by the following:

You should see a single entry in the list with a default value of true. Double-click on it to set the value to false, restart Firefox, and your Smart Bookmarks folder is now back:

Nice and simple, just the way it should be.
