In recent years, many businesses have moved toServer 2003 for their IT infrastructure. One of the benefits of Server 2003 is that it includes Shadow Copy technology, which allows you to copy files and folders without having to worry about the originals. shadowcopy is a great way to recover deleted files from a Server 2003 system. To use shadowcopy, you first need to create a shadow copy of your original files and folders. To do this, you will need to create a new Shadow Copy Volume on your server and name it after the file or folder you want to copy. Then, you will need to add the files and folders you want to copy into the Shadow Copy Volume. Finally, you will need to click on the “Create Shadow Copy Volume” button. When you click on the “Create Shadow Copy Volume” button, your server will start creating a new Shadow Copy Volume with all of your original files and folders inside it. You can then access your new Shadow Copy Volume from any location on your computer by going into its properties and clicking on the “ShadowCopyVolume” tab. You can also use this volume as your primary storage for copied files and folders.

Have them navigate to the network drive where the file was located and right click any open area in the explorer window and choose properties Previous Versions.  As you can see it will list several previous versions of the files and folders on that drive.

Usually I have the pick the most recent version.  Keep in mind that any unsaved data entered into the files that was not saved will need to be re entered.  This works very well without having to recreate the files from a backup tape or drive.
