Windows 7 users may have noticed that the icons and cursors in the operating system have been modified to include a new design. This new design is called the “Metro” style, and it is used in many different applications and websites. Unfortunately, this new design can be difficult to customize, and it can be difficult to remove. If you want to keep your Windows 7 icons and cursors the way they are, you need to take some precautions. First, make sure that no themes modify these elements. Second, make sure that your cursor is not modified by any third-party applications or tools. Finally, if you want to revert back to the old icons and cursors, you will need to use a custom theme or a tool like CursorFX. ..

Note: This tip is really meant for beginner geeks.

Simply right-click on the desktop, choose Personalize, and then click on Change desktop icons on the left:

Then remove the checkbox from “Allow themes to change desktop icons”. Note that you can also use this dialog to choose which icons actually show up on the desktop.

I don’t personally mind if themes change out my icons—but don’t mess with my mouse cursor! Back in the Personalize screen above, you should have seen a link for “Change mouse pointers”, which will take you to this dialog:

Uncheck the box for “Allow themes to change mouse pointers”, and you should be all done.
